1 Corinthians 1

Appeal to Unity

1 Paul, ^acalled as an apostle of Jesus Christ ^{▼▼Lit through}by ^cthe will of God, and our ^dbrother ^eSosthenes,

2 To ^fthe church of God which is in ^gCorinth, to those who have been sanctified in Christ Jesus, ^{▼▼Lit holy ones; i.e., God’s people}saints ⁱby calling, with all who in every place ^jcall on the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, their Lord and ours:

3 ^kGrace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

4 ^lI thank ^{▼▼Two early mss do not contain my}my God always concerning you for the grace of God which was given you in Christ Jesus, 5 that in everything you were ⁿenriched in Him, in all ^ospeech and ^pall knowledge, 6 just as ^qthe testimony concerning Christ was confirmed ^{▼▼Or among}in you, 7 so that you are not lacking in any gift, as you eagerly ^sawait the revelation of our Lord Jesus Christ, 8 ^twho will also ^{▼▼Or strengthen}confirm you to the end, blameless on ^vthe day of our Lord Jesus Christ. 9 ^wGod is faithful, through whom you were ^xcalled into ^yfellowship with His Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.

10 Now ^zI urge you, ^aabrothers and sisters, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you all ^{▼▼Lit say the same thing}agree and that there be no ^{▼▼Lit schisms
,} ^addivisions among you, but that you be ^{▼▼Or united}made complete in ^afthe same mind and in the same judgment. 11 For I have been informed concerning you, my brothers and sisters, by Chloe’s people, that there are quarrels among you. 12 Now I mean this, that ^ageach one of you is saying, “I am ^{▼▼Lit of}with Paul,” ^{▼▼Lit and}or “I am ^{▼▼Lit of}with ^akApollos,” ^{▼▼Lit and}or “I am ^{▼▼Lit of}with ^{▼▼Peter’s Aramaic name
,} ^aoCephas,” ^{▼▼Lit and}or “I am ^{▼▼Lit of}with Christ.” 13 ^{▼▼Or Christ has been divided! or Christ is divided!}Has Christ been divided? Paul was not crucified for you, was he? Or were you ^asbaptized ^{▼▼Lit into}in the name of Paul? 14 I am thankful that I ^aubaptized none of you except ^avCrispus and ^awGaius, 15 so that no one would say you were baptized ^{▼▼Lit into}in my name! 16 But I did baptize the ^ayhousehold of Stephanas also; beyond that, I do not know if I baptized anyone else. 17 ^azFor Christ did not send me to baptize, but to preach the gospel, ^banot with ^{▼▼I.e., persuasive rhetoric}cleverness of speech, so that the cross of Christ would not be made of no effect.

The Wisdom of God

18 For the word of the cross is ^bcfoolishness to ^bdthose who ^{▼▼Or perish}are perishing, but to us who ^{▼▼Or are saved}are being saved it is ^bgthe power of God. 19 For it is written:

“ ^bhI will destroy the wisdom of the wise,
And the understanding of those who have understanding, I will confound.”
20 ^biWhere is the wise person? Where is the scribe? Where is the debater of ^bjthis age? Has God not ^bkmade foolish the wisdom of ^blthe world? 21 For since in the wisdom of God ^bmthe world through its wisdom did not come to know God, ^bnGod ^{▼▼Or resolved}was pleased through the ^bpfoolishness of the ^{▼▼Lit preaching}message preached to ^brsave those who believe. 22 For indeed ^bsJews ask for ^{▼▼Or confirming miracles}signs and Greeks search for wisdom; 23 but we preach ^{▼▼I.e., the Messiah
,} ^bvChrist crucified, ^bwto Jews a stumbling block, and to Gentiles ^bxfoolishness, 24 but to those who are ^bythe called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ ^bzthe power of God and ^cathe wisdom of God. 25 For the ^cbfoolishness of God is wiser than mankind, and ^ccthe weakness of God is stronger than mankind.

26 For ^{▼▼Lit see}consider your ^cecalling, brothers and sisters, that there were ^cfnot many wise according to ^{▼▼I.e., human standards}the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble; 27 but ^chGod has chosen the foolish things of ^cithe world to shame the wise, and God has chosen the weak things of ^cjthe world to shame the things which are strong, 28 and the ^{▼▼Or lowly}insignificant things of ^clthe world and the despised God has chosen, ^cmthe things that are not, so that He may ^cnnullify the things that are, 29 so that ^cono ^{▼▼Lit flesh}human may boast before God. 30 But it is ^{▼▼Lit from Him}due to Him that you are in ^crChrist Jesus, who became to us ^cswisdom from God, ^{▼▼Or both}and ^curighteousness and ^cvsanctification, and ^cwredemption, 31 so that, just as it is written: “ ^cxLet the one who boasts, boast in the Lord.”
